Instead of a silent auction, attendees bid in a live auction and on raffle baskets, sparking friendly bidding wars for prize packages — including two travel getaways.

THE DALLES — Community members gathered Sept. 11 at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center for the 2025 Distinguished Citizens Awards Banquet, an annual celebration hosted by The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce.
The event’s theme, A Night to Remember: Honoring Heroes, Celebrating Community, paid tribute to veterans, first responders and residents who contribute to the vitality of The Dalles.
Because the banquet was held in a military facility this year, the evening began with a flag ceremony by Boy Scouts Troop 398, followed by the pledge of allegiance and the national anthem performed by Leslie Wilson. Veterans and their families were then asked to stand and were honored with a round of applause.
This year brought several changes to the banquet format. “We had to do some changes, just due to economy, time, volunteers, and all of that,” said Lisa Farquharson, president and CEO of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce. She added, “But I am really pleased with the awards, speeches, just the recognition, being able to recognize our community. I felt like everybody had fun.”

The banquet, catered by Cousins’ Country Inn, combined laughter, applause and a few tears as awardees were honored for their service and leadership.
The chamber annually recognizes individuals and organizations who strengthen the region. The 2025 categories and winners were: Outstanding Woman, Colleen Ballinger; Outstanding Man, Bill Hamilton; Volunteer of the Year, Gill Anderson; Business of the Year, Gorge Academy of Cosmetology and Massage, led and owned by Kerri Weed; Agriculture Person(s) of the Year, Ken Polehn; Outstanding Youth (ages 16–21), Jessica Antunez Garza; Educator of the Year, Kristal Corey; and First Responder of the Year, the Coastal Air Strike team.
Award recipients are traditionally unaware they have been nominated. Farquharson said she was relieved this year because she enlisted families to help ensure honorees attended. “I didn’t have to lie this time,” Farquharson joked, recalling past efforts to surprise winners.
The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce invited residents from across Wasco County and neighboring communities to join in honoring those who “make the region extraordinary,” according to its website.
