THE GORGE — The United Way of the Columbia Gorge reached a historic milestone on Oct. 25 as its 15th Annual “Prom Through the Decades” benefit gala raised an unprecedented $265,000 to support local nonprofits across the Gorge. Hosted at the Best Western PLUS Hood River Inn, the sold-out event blended nostalgia, community spirit, and philanthropy into an unforgettable evening.
This year’s fundraising total marks the highest in the event’s history, with funds set to support 33 nonprofit partners serving families, youth, seniors, and neighbors facing critical needs across Hood River, Wasco/Sherman, Klickitat, and Skamania counties.
A Night of Festivity, Fundraising, and Community Connection
Guests embraced the prom theme with styles spanning the decades, filling the Gorge Room with vintage elegance, bold ‘80s flair, and early 2000s nostalgia. The evening featured spirited bidding in silent and live auctions, and heartfelt presentations from community partners, including Breen Goodwin of the Columbia Gorge Food Bank, Tom and Emily Waters of Backwoods Brewing Foundation, and Mari-Beth Guenther of Mid Valley PTO.
A high-energy performance by the NK Studios dancers, sponsored by Julie Gilbert, electrified the room and added to the night’s celebratory atmosphere.
A Surprise Coronation to End the Night
The gala closed with a joyful twist as Gordy Sato was unexpectedly crowned Prom King. In a playful show of support, several longtime friends rushed the stage in cheerleading outfits to present him with a crown and varsity jacket.
Moments later, the crowd cheered again as Executive Director Caroline Grew was surprised with the title of Prom Queen, a warm recognition of her leadership and commitment to the community.
Honoring Community Leaders
In addition to the Prom King and Queen, the gala recognized an outstanding Prom Court: Bob Weisfield, Ryan and Talia Kreps, Mark Nilsson, Marianne Durkan, and Debbie Mayer, each celebrated for their service and dedication to the Gorge.
The event was guided by host Barb Ayers, with longtime auctioneer Archer Mayo helping drive record-setting bids. Photographer Brett Stomps captured the night, and NK Studios provided fabulous entertainment.
