South Wasco County won its second consecutive regular season Big Sky volleyball title after winning four more games last week to finish with a 12-0 mark and 21-10 overall.
The Redsides started with a 3-2 win over Dufur on Oct. 10, followed by a 3-0 win over Horizon Christian on Oct. 12. The Redsides then played in a three-team event Oct. 14 at Sherman High School in Moro, where they won 3-0 over Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler and 3-1 win over the Sherman Huskies.
In the matchup versus Sherman, Hailee Pechanec (eight kills) and Jayda Iverson (eight kills) led the Huskies’ offense. Anabell Udey was 14-for-15 from the service line and had eight aces. Tayler Brittain led the Huskies in digs with 15. In the game versus the Eagles, Justee Gotham was 27-28 serving with five aces. Udey (11 kills) and Iverson (nine kills) helped lead the offensive attack at the net.
The Redsides earned the No. 1 seed from the Big Sky West Division, and they’ll play in the district tournament Oct. 21 at The Dalles High School against a yet-to-be determined opponent in the four-team event.
Dufur gets second place
The Dufur High Rangers concluded the Big Sky League regular season by winning two-of-three games to finish second in the West Division standings behind the Redsides. After losing 3-2 to South Wasco, the Rangers bounced back and won at home, 3-0, over the Glenwood/Klickitat High Eagles on Oct. 12, followed by a 3-0 home win over Condon.
Dufur will play Condon in a first-round district playoff game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Dufur High School. The winner will advance to the four-team Big Sky District Tournament Oct. 21 in The Dalles. The top three teams at district will qualify for the 1A state playoffs beginning Oct. 25.
Sherman wins one of three games
The Sherman Huskies won one out-of-three games last week to hold onto second place in the Big Sky East Division standings behind the first place Ione/Arlington High Cardinals (10-1 league, 20-3 overall). Sherman lost 3-1 to Condon Oct. 10 at home and then played in a three-team dual event Oct. 14 at home. The Huskies won 3-0 over Klickwood (4-8 league, 5-11 overall), followed by a 3-1 loss to South Wasco.
The Huskies will play a first-round district playoff game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home versus Klickwood. The winner will advance to the four-team Big Sky District Tournament Oct. 21 in The Dalles.
Klickwood loses three straight
Despite losing three straight games last week, Klickwood qualified for the Big Sky district playoffs for a third consecutive season. The Eagles lost 3-0 to Dufur on Oct. 12, followed by a 3-1 loss on Oct. 14 to Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler, and a 3-0 loss to Sherman in Moro on Oct. 14.
Lyle/Wishram gets first win
The Lyle/Wishram High Cougars won snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Horizon Christian on Oct. 10 in Hood River. The Cougars followed by losing 3-0 in their season finale Oct. 14 to Condon at Dufur High School. Â
