Matthew Bergstrom and Kylie Webb won state titles for Hood River Valley Swim Team at the Oregon Swimming 10-and-under Championships in Albany, Ore., July 14-15.
Bergstrom, of Snowden, was victorious in the 50-meter butterfly for 10-year-old boys. In that swim, the first-time state champion re-set his own HRVST age-group record, finishing in a time of 35.12 seconds, which was 1.80 seconds faster than his previous team standard.
"Matt had a great meet," said HRVST Coach Shelly Rawding, noting Bergstrom posted personal records in five of his six swims.
In addition to his first-place effort in the 50-meter butterfly, Bergstrom placed second in the 100 freestyle, third in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle, and fifth in the 50 breast stroke.
Webb, of Hood River, also qualified for the state meet in six events and scored her victory in the 100-meter breast stroke for 10-year-old girls. Her time of 1 minute, 30.51 seconds was a personal record by 4.25 seconds.
Another local swimmer, Aidan Trummel of White Salmon, made his state-meet debut with a 25-place finish in the 50-meter breast stroke for boys 8 and under. His time, 1:08.78, was his best-ever for the event by 5.45 seconds.
Adam Wooster won two events and Anna Anderson, Scott Bergstrom, Aidan Trummel and Becka Wooster each won one for the Hood River Valley Swim Team, which placed second in team standings at the 59th annual Ted Walker Memorial Invitational, held July 13-15 in The Dalles, Ore.
Wooster, 15, of Husum, notched victories--and personal records--in the 400-meter individual medley (IM) and 200-meter breast stroke for boys 15-and-over, and accounted for 34 of HRVST's 457 points.
His time in the 400 IM (6 minutes, 4.44 seconds) was a personal record by 21.79 seconds; in the 200 breast stroke (3:07.72), by 6.98 seconds.
Anderson, 16, Snowden, hit the wall first in the girls 15-and-over 400-meter individual medley (IM), in a personal-record time of 5:57.39.
Bergstrom, 12, Snowden, was victorious in the 400 IM for boys ages 11-12. He shattered his personal record in the event by 1:06.65, finishing in 6:08.94.
Trummel, 8, White Salmon, posted a top finish in the 100 backstroke for boys 8-and-under. His time was 2:06.54.
Becka Wooster's victory came in the 200 freestyle for girls ages 11-12. The 11-year-old finished in 2:52.90, lowering her personal record in the event by almost a full minute (58.21 seconds).
