Mary Lee is on the lookout for a few good volunteers.
As activity director at Brookside Manor, an assisted living facility with a special wing for people with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia, she works with a special population.
"Sometimes it's hard to think of ways to engage our residents, particularly in the Alzheimer's wing," she said. "We'd be grateful if people from around the area were to donate just a few hours -- even just one hour -- of their time."
Lee realizes that people sometimes don't want to make a regular weekly or monthly commitment, and that's fine with her. Do you play a musical instrument? Do magic or card tricks? Dance? Tell stories in an engaging way? Would you be willing to share these skills with Brookside Manor's residents occasionally?
Does your church have a choir or small singing group? Could you read aloud or play a board game once in a while? Perhaps you might bring in a plate of cookies and sit for a few minutes sharing them with residents.
"Music and food are two good ways to get through to many of our residents," said Lee. "We want to give them little moments of joy. Most of them aren't building memories any more."
