The use of any headset or earphones, which are connected to any electronic device capable of receiving a radio broadcast or playing a sound recording, while operating any motor vehicle on a public highway is prohibited in Washington State (Revised Code of Washington 46.37.480 (2)).

The headset or earphones muffle or exclude sounds outside of the vehicle. With your ears covered listening to the radio or other sound recordings, you are less likely to hear what is going on around you, in or out of the vehicle.
