Now that the leaves have fallen off your trees and shrubs, take a look around your property. Maybe you'd like to attract more wildlife to your yard. Maybe you have bare spots on your property. Or maybe your stream bank needs shading and erosion protection.
Whatever your reason for planting, Underwood Conservation District can help you get ready. For its annual plant sale, UCD is offering low-cost native conifer and hardwood seedlings, all one to three years old.
Conifer species include Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, western red cedar, giant sequoia and more. Various deciduous tree and shrub species are also available. Trees will be ready for pick-up in March 2011, just in time for spring planting. Be sure to order early to ensure availability of the species you want.
Why plant native tree species? They can be beneficial in many ways. They are well-adapted to the local climate and often require less water and maintenance. They are often more fire-resistant than some ornamentals. They also help protect soil, attract wildlife, and help prevent noxious weed infestations. Conifer trees are an excellent investment and can serve as a visual buffer or windbreak for your home.
In response to popular demand, UCD is offering four hardwood seedling mixes specifically designed to attract wildlife. Mixes appropriate for both riparian and upland locations are available, as well as east-side and west-side adapted mixes.
Free of cost, UCD helps landowners design stewardship plans for their property with advice on planting and thinning methods, water and soil protection, and wildlife habitat improvements. UCD can help arrange for cost-share assistance in implementing projects protecting your natural resources. UCD also has planting tools available for loan.
Last year UCD sold over 17,000 plants to local residents and landowners. UCD is a not-for-profit, non-regulatory agency, designed to assist landowners in natural resource stewardship and enhancement.
