Rep. Greg Walden will not attend an April 8 “Constituent Town Hall” in Hood River, due to previously-scheduled commitments, according to his spokesman, Andrew Malcolm.
A coalition of community advocacy groups has organized the event from 4:30-6 p.m. at Hood River Middle School. Organizers said they expect more than 300 constituents from Second Congressional District to voice their concerns, discuss recent developments in Congress, and pose questions for Walden.
Organizer Bonnie New said the groups invited Walden by phone and email on March 10 and March 17, but Malcolm said Monday that “We only received the invitation today.
“We are currently planning town hall meetings in the Gorge and other areas of the district in April,” Malcolm said; no dates have yet been set.
The coalition putting on the April 8 event is comprised of Columbia Gorge Climate Action Network, Columbia Gorge Women’s Action Network, Gorge Ecumenical Ministries, Indivisible Columbia Gorge, Protect Oregon’s Progress, and South Wasco Indivisible.
“The constituent town hall will indeed proceed,” without Walden, New said. “The point is that it is created by constituents for constituents, to allow a public forum for their current concerns and questions on federal issues, specifically in the setting of an elected representative such as Walden not being accessible or responsive to constituents’ repeated requests for same.
“If Mr. Walden chooses to come at the last minute, he is most welcome. If not, that will be part of our story. The spoken and written testimony offered by constituents will be recorded and transmitted to Mr. Walden and the press after the meeting.”
