Mariah Rawding had quite an Oregon state swim meet for herself and her team last weekend.
The 11-year-old from Husum achieved two Hood River Valley Swim Team age-group records, a Western Zone meet qualifying time and six personal records (PRs) during the Feb. 21-24 championships in Corvallis.
Rawding, who qualified for the state meet in six events, won the 100-yard breast stroke in a team record and Zone qualifying time of 1 minute, 13.71 seconds, which bettered former standard bearer Neticia Enesi's time by 2.40 seconds.
Her other team record time came in the 50 breast stroke--an event in which she placed third in 34.35 seconds. (The old mark of 35.32, set in 2000, also belonged to Enesi.)
Rawding completed her meet with one first-place finish, one second, two thirds and two fourths and accounted for 38 of HRVST's 82 points. The team point total was good for 16th place overall.
Scott Bergstrom, 13, of Snowden tallied six PRs, swam in four finals and recorded top finishes of third place in the 1650-yard freestyle and fourth in the 1000 freestyle, both for boys ages 11-13.
Matthew Bergstrom, 11, took fourth in the finals of his age group's 50-yard butterfly and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle. Moreover, his efforts between preliminaries and finals produced six PRs.
Bergstrom's time in the 50 butterfly (30.57 seconds) was among his PRs and good for an HRVST age-group standard. The previous, almost year-old record (31.03) was held by his brother.
