The Pirates pick up two weekend wins

Information for the following was provided by Cascade Locks Athletic Director Lance Masters:

Girls vs. Helix

The Pirates held a lead throughout the game, but they could not seem to pull away with a certain win. Heather Mohr picked up her third foul at the beginning of the second quarter and the Pirates’ defense gave up a few easy baskets to let the Grizzlies back in the contest.

The second half was closely contested. Helix hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 32 with under a minute remaining. Holly Goben sank a short jumper to give Cascade Locks the lead. She followed the clutch shot with a crucial steal with seconds remaining to keep Helix out of scoring position.

Boys vs. Helix

The Pirates fell behind by as much as 10 points in the first half. Helix played very physical, effectively putting Cascade Locks out of their game by keeping inside shooter Joe Nolin off the ball.

The Pirates regained their composure in the second half and fought back to tie the game 35-35 at the end of the third quarter. Outside shooting by key reserve player Daniel Nolin, combined with tough defense by senior Sam Thomas, helped Cascade Locks run away with the game in the final period.

“I can’t remember the last time we came home from Helix winning both games,” Coach Phil Nolin said. “It is a tough place to play and our kids worked hard to earn those wins.” Helix Athletic Director Wayne Miller complimented the Pirates, “Those were a couple of exciting games. Our boys just couldn’t hold it together at the end and that is a credit to Cascade Locks. They deserved the win.”

Girls vs. Central Christian

The Cascade Locks girls ran away with the game from the tip off. Quick inside buckets from Mikayla Ryan and Heather Mohr and a three from Nicole Martin set the pace for the Pirates, who led 27-9 by halftime.

In the second half, the Pirates took contributions from freshman Leah Stratton and sophomore Kristen Rutherford as Coach Donna Nolin looked to her bench for some playing time.

“We can never seem to get it going when we come up here,” said Central Christian’s coach Lon Austin. “Cascade Locks has a good team and they will do well in our league.”

Boys vs. Crook County

After a thrilling come from behind win at Helix the night before, the Cascade Locks boys took an easier path to victory on Saturday. Quick passes to post Joe Nolin got it started for the Pirates, while sophomore Derrick Harbaugh added a three-pointer from off the backboard. A fast break bucket by Daniel Nolin and a buzzer-beating shot by Sam Thomas gave Cascade Locks a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Crook County stuck in the game for much of the first half, but the outside shooting from Cascade Locks was too much for the Warriors and the Pirates led by 10 points at half time.

The boys doubled their lead in the second half to run away with the win.

The Pirates return home Friday to play Arlington: girls start at 6 p.m., boys at 7:30 p.m.
