Does Lyle seem more in line now?
Erik Titus from Stanwood, who graduated from Lyle High in 1984, was in town recently. He and his family hiked to the "Lyle" sign above town and realigned the second "L." It was reported that three of the six hikers enjoyed the trek!
A memorial Service to celebrate the lives of Winifred & James Benjamin "Ben" Flippin will be held at the United Methodist Church in Arlington, Ore., on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005. A potluck luncheon will follow the service. Please bring any pictures of Ben or Winifred you may have to share. Memorial donations will be given to local community organizations selected by the family.
The next council meeting is Monday, Aug. 22, at the Lions Club. Some of the items that will be on the agenda are: Community "Meth" Education night, Chili Cook-off, a Lyle Lewis & Clark Commemorative postage cancellation, candidates' night and much more. Everyone is encouraged to attend these meetings and become involved in the workings of the community.
Pete Graves of "Bumming Around" fame will be playing Saturday night, Aug. 27, at the Lyle Tap Room. If you enjoy country music come and dance and listen to a local favorite.
Terry Mills asked us to report that the new "Museum" (still looking for a name) is ready to take donations pertaining to the history of Lyle. If you have pictures you would rather not give to the museum we have the equipment to make copies of them so that they can be returned to you. Please call Terry or any council member to make arrangements.
Churches in Lyle are the United Methodist, 403 Klickitat St, and Lyle Celebration Center, 715 Washington St.
From old newspaper clippings (paper unknown) Thursday February 19, 1968.
"We believe in preserving old things, and have one of the original prune trees planted a century ago, which is still bearing profusely outside our house, If we in Lyle were members of an up-an-coming community, we would purchase and restore either the bank building or the old hotel, and create a museum in one of them as Goldendale has done in one of its pioneer residences. Burning the sheds was not only shortsighted, but tragic. The young folks who would remodel Lyle into a modern village are a pain in "Grandfather's" neck, if we may be pardoned for making that blunt observation. Such callous indifference to the values of the past is regrettable indeed."
Maybe this will jog some memories:
Here's a word I miss -- "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffeemaker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.
