Maryhill Museum will hold two summer art workshops during July for teachers and others interested in exploring art, history and culture.
Both workshops are held in the museum and feature lectures, study of original art in the galleries, and hands-on studio sessions.
Clock hours and credit are available for both workshops through the graduate school of education/continuing education, Portland State University.
"Art of the Written Word," a three-day workshop, will begin on July 10 and focus on the beauty found in human communication from cave art to calligraphy and illuminated manuscripts to typography.
Participants will design and make an art book that can be used in the classroom.
Special guest teacher for the workshop is Roberta Lavadour, internationally noted artist and papermaker.
Registration fees are $135, non-credit; $155, 20 clock hours; $219 for 2 credit hours.
The art, history and culture of the Pacific Northwest will be explored in a weeklong workshop from July 22-26. The course will sample the rich artistic and cultural contributions of the many diverse cultural groups that make up the Northwest today.
The focus will follow an interdisciplinary approach and will include the visual arts, literature, music, social studies and more.
