Through the end of the year, sport fishermen must release all white sturgeon they catch between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife ordered anglers to release all sport-caught sturgeon taken between the two dams, in the stretch known as the Celilo Pool, starting at midnight Monday, April 9.
The new release rule for sturgeon will remain in effect through Dec. 31. The rule does not apply to sturgeon caught between John Day Dam and McNary Dam.
WDFW announced the April 9 cutoff date for retention of sturgeon was adopted because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimated the harvest guideline of 700 fish would be met by then.
Studies indicate the sturgeon populations have been growing between Bonneville and McNary dams under the harvest guidelines.
