It had been 50 years -- half a century! -- since a Columbia High School sports team had won a state championship. (Way back in 1959, the football team won it all with a 9-0 record.) But on May 30, 2009, the Columbia High boys soccer team put the school in the history books: The team capped an amazing 20-1 season by defeating Connell in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Class 1A finals, and brought the title home to White Salmon.
What an amazing run.
This team lost its first match of the season, then ran off 20 straight wins on its way to claiming the championship trophy. That's domination.
Congratulations to everyone on this team -- players, coaches, and managers. Superb job. You've set a shining example for every CHS sports team, and the entire community is proud of you.
The heroes on this team are many -- Ricardo Sandoval had a hand in all four of the goals scored in the semi-final and final matches as CHS beat Seattle Academy 2-0, and then Connell, also 2-0. During those two games, Sandoval scored thrice and assisted on another goal. Sandoval is a freshman, so we might get used to this type of success on the soccer field.
Mark Lovrin, the Bruins' leading scorer all season, also had a goal in the championship round versus Connell, and Carlos Mendoza provided stellar goaltending.
Those three were in the spotlight for making standout plays, but it takes a whole team to win a title. Here is the team's entire roster: Carlos Mendoza, Louy Lerebourg, Aaron Cabrera, Finn Anderson, Ricardo Sandoval, Javier Ortiz, Hector Barajas, Mark Lovrin, Francisco Villanueva, Ramon Villanueva, Miguel Ramirez, Andres Herrera, Ramon Cortez, Cristian Olivares, Noe Salazar, Jose Briones, Luis Zamudio, Will Nybroten, and Daniel Hernandez.
The Bruins' soccer team was coached by Peter Knowles, who clearly did a masterful job of molding his team to be successful. Great work, Coach.
The assistant coaches for the 2009 CHS soccer team were Jose Maya and Amy Kasenga; the team managers were Karina Barajas and Javier Meza. It was an excellent effort by all involved.
The city needs to have a parade to honor the championship brought to White Salmon by this band of outstanding hometown athletes and coaches.
