Prep Girls Cross Country:
Neola Putnam of Glenwood finished fifth, in a time of 20 minutes, 17 seconds, in last Saturday's WIAA B classes final in Pasco, in a race that featured a dual between a three-time state competitior and the 1B/2B meet's defending individual champion.
Joscelyn Minton, a senior, outran 2006 winner Lisa Vandenburg, a sophomore from Northwest Christian (Colbert), 19:14 to 19:23, to help Northwest Christian (Lacey) edge St. George's of Spokane, 34 to 37, for the team title for the second year in a row.
Putnam, a junior, now has a pair of top-five finishes at the state meet to her credit. She placed third in 2006.
Prep Boys Cross Country:
Klickitat senior Herschel Sanchey completed last Saturday's WIAA 1B/2B final in 17 minutes, 7 seconds--good for third place behind Matt Cronrath, senior, of Odessa (16:40) and Jeff Pope, junior, Valley Christian (16:42).
The fourth-place finisher, senior Brian Angove, led St. George's of Spokane to a second-straight team title. St. George's, which averaged 17:52 per man around the Sun Willows course, placed three runners in the top five and all five scorers in the first 19.
Prep Volleyball:
Southwest District 1A tournament runner-up Stevenson opens Friday at the double-elimination WIAA Class 1A tournament in Yakima against Chelan of the South Central District.
The Bulldogs lost last Saturday's Southwest District championship match to Onalaska in straight sets, 25-11, 25-18, 25-23. Stevenson progressed to the final by beat Forks, 3-1, and Montesano, 3-0.
For Onalaska, it's the first district volleyball title since 2002.
In other district action Castle Rock secured a second state berth for the SWW 1A League's Trico Division by defeating Montesano in the match for third place. Castle Rock's first-round opponent at state will be three-time defending champion Colfax.
Prep Girls Soccer:
Trico champion La Center repeated as Southwest District Class 1A champion with a 1-0 shutout of Winlock-Toledo United last Thursday in Kalama, in a playoff match for state seeding.
La Center was scheduled to play its state tournament opener on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Kalama, against the team from Seattle Christian High School.
Prep Football:
Tenino ended a 21-year playoff drought last Friday, holding off La Center, 33-27, in a SWW 1A League crossover game that put the winner in the state playoffs.
Trailing 33-14 in the fourth quarter, La Center made it interesting with a pair of touchdowns in the last 5 minutes and by driving to Tenino's 29-yard line before time expired.
In other crossover games with playoff implications, Castle Rock advanced to the state playoffs again with a 33-14 victory over Onalaska, while Montesano earned a 14-6 win over Kalama in a state seeding game.
Elsewhere, Stevenson lost to Rainier, 26-20, in overtime in a crossover game played at Tumwater High School.
Mike Renner sparked the Bulldogs (1-9), throwing touchdown passes to Casey West (34 yards) and Troy Stump (50 yards). Renner was 13 for 29 for 297 yards, with three interceptions, and Stump had eight receptions for 165 yards.
Prep Sports:
Monday, Nov. 12, is the first day of practice for the 2007-08 high school basketball and wrestling seasons.
Columbia High athletes must have a current physical examination report and an accident and illness form on file in the main office by Nov. 12 if they want to take part in the season-opening practice.
Youth Basketball:
White Salmon Community Youth will be holding basketball sign-ups on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Henkle Middle School.
