Registration starts at 9 a.m. and races begin at 10. Youths ages 5-8 will swim 25 meters, ride a bike one mile and run a quarter mile. The 9- to 12-year-olds will swim 50 meters, ride a bike two miles and run a half mile.

Triathlon:

The 20th annual Columbia Gorge Aluminum Man Triathlon will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at Riverfront Park in The Dalles, Ore. A registration and entry fee of $70 is available up to Sept. 3. The fee from Sept. 4 until the day of the races is $85.

The entry fee includes a commemorative T-shirt and a lunch following the race. No refunds will be allowed after Sept. 2 and are subject to a $10 handling fee. (TRI Northwest members get $5 off the entry fee.)

The event is limited to 350 competitors. Athletes will have a choice of two events: The Olympic course featuring a 1-kilometer swim, 50km bike ride and 10km run or the Sprint course consisting of a .5km swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. Swimmers are allowed to wear wetsuits and helmets are required on the bike ride. To register online, go to www.racecenter.com.

Baseball:

Ken Wilson, president of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League, on Aug. 25 announced the selection of record-setting Bend (Ore.) Elks outfielder Drew Heid as the league's 2008 Most Valuable Player.

Heid, who attended high school in Waterville but calls Goldendale home, was named the WCCBL's MVP after establishing new league standards for batting average (.403), hits (64), runs scored (39) and total bases (90), while leading Bend to its first league playoff berth.

The 5-foot-9, left-handed hitting senior-to be at Gonzaga University in Spokane is the first WCCBL player to hit over .400. Heid, 22, played one season at Walla Walla Community College, where he set a school single-season record for base hits, before transferring to Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference.

The West Coast Collegiate Baseball League is an eight-team, wood-bat summer league for college players located in the Pacific Northwest.
