Former Hood River Valley High School swimmer Caitlyn Shortt has qualified for the U.S.A. Swimming Summer Nationals Meet. At U.S.A. Swimming Spring Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind., April 1-5, Shortt took 16th in the 200 IM, 26nd in the 200 breaststroke; 22nd in 400 IM, and 46th in 100 breaststroke. Shortt, 17, competed with between 74 to 108 swimmers in the events. Summer Nationals will be in College Park, Md., in August. She is also preparing to compete at the Olympic Trials in June 2004 at a new 15,000-seat complex in Long Beach, Calif.
TOP Soccer giving kids kicks at HRMS
TOP Soccer, the community outreach program for soccer, has begun its fourth season in Hood River. The program is geared for elementary and middle school children with special needs, and offers an unmatched coach-to-player ratio that makes learning fun. Boys place 4th at Seaside tourney
Under cloudy skies with the occasional drop of rain, the Hood River Valley boys golf team took 4th place at the Seaside Invitational Golf Tournament in Gearhart.
Senior Jake Morgan posted the top score of the day for the Eagles with 76. He was followed by sophomore Herbie Annala with an 84 and junior Jimmy Woodruff with an 85.
Junior Chris Perry came out with an 87 and sophomore Alex Bryan with an 89.
“This was a great round for Jake at 4 over par,” coach Bill DeBorde said. “Also a great round for Alex. This is a personal best for a varsity tournament for Alex.”
Team score for the Eagles was 332. Tillamook came out on top with a 306, followed by Astoria with 322 and The Dalles with 328.
HRGC ladies tee up May 6
It was a close race at Hood River Golf and Country Club on April 30 when the ladies played for the least number of putts for the day. Vera Hawk had only 33 putts to win first place, but Susan Gutzler and Maxine Negley were right behind her with 34.
Vivian Foster took fourth place with 35 and Patsy Prideux was in fifth with 36. Frances Arnold, Shirley Ekker and Barb Zeller tied for sixth place with 37.
On May 6, tee time changes to 8:30 a.m. for the summer. This being the first Tuesday of the month, ladies are asked to arrive by 8 a.m. for the monthly business meeting.
Babe Ruth 14-year-olds win two
The local 14-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team opened league play last Saturday with two big wins over teams from The Dalles. Hood River won game one over Pepsi by a 14-1 count, and took care of Y-102 in game two by a score of 8-1.
CGWA work party set for Saturday
The Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association has scheduled a work party from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Doug’s Beach (Highway 14, just east of Lyle, Wash.). Clif Bar and the Washington State Parks have teamed up with CGWA to help pick up litter and winter debris, as well as clean up the roadside. Volunteers are asked to bring weed-eaters, shovels, clippers and gloves to help the cause. The work party is part of the Washington State Parks’ “Adopt-A-Park” program, and is open to anyone. Trail Daze scheduled for May 10
Hood River Community Education and Shortt Supply are teaming up once again for Trail Daze, which will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Hood River Valley High School. The event will offers a series of informational clinics for a small fee of $15. The clinics will last all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature separate hour-and-a-half sessions that focus on orienteering, footwear, hydration and more. One of the highlights of Trail Daze will be a hands-on orienteering demonstration by world-renowned orienteer, Mal Harding. If you would like to learn more, call Community Education at 386-2055.
