Collegiate Men's Track & Field:
Western Washington's Adam Neff was named the Outstanding Male Performer last Saturday at the fourth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at Tomlinson Field in Ellensburg.
Neff, a sophomore from White Salmon, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and ran a leg of Western's victorious 4x100 relay in helping the Vikings capture their first GNAC outdoor title after three straight runner-up finishes.
Neff finished first in the 100 in 11 seconds flat and completed the 200 race in a time of 21.91--beating teammate Mike Khabibulin in both--to account for a portion of Western's meet-best 221 points.
Neff and Khabibulin also figured in Western's first-place time of 42.16 in the 4x100 relay and third-place effort (3:21.65) in the 4x400 relay.
Prep Track & Field:
Mitch Wheelhouse of Glenwood won the boys shot put with a personal-best throw and Trout Lake's Adam Paxson finished first in the boys 1600-meter run last Friday at Washougal's Panther Twilight Invitational.
Wheelhouse tossed the iron ball 51 feet, 9 inches--the first time in his career that he had exceeded 50 feet. He was second in the discus (153-4.5).
Paxson posted a time of 4 minutes, 42.94 seconds to win the 1600 by better than 4 seconds.
Second-place finishers included Trout Lake's Matt Dearden (3200, 10:40.04) and Peter Schmid (300 hurdles, 42.09), and Tony Leiter of Glenwood (pole vault, 13-0).
In the team standings, Trout Lake placed fourth of eight with 44 points. Glenwood tied Kalama for sixth with 30 and Lyle was last with 16.
Lyle (29), Trout Lake (28) and Glenwood (16) were sixth-eighth in the girls team competition.
The only girl from those entries to win an event was Kayleigh King of Glenwood. She finished first in the diccus with a throw of 88-11.
Jessica Cochenour had Lyle's highest finish. She ran second in the 3200 (5:54.89). Trout Lake's best effort--a second--came in the 4x100-meter relay (58.97).
Jr. High Track & Field:
Erin Jones established two eighth grade school records and Luis Roque set one for White Salmon's Henkle Middle School during a three-team meet May 4 in Stevenson.
Jones' career-best efforts came in the girls 800- and 1600-meter runs. Roque made his mark in the boys 400.
During the same meet, Henkle's seventh-grade boys and girls teams won their respective competitions to run their season records to 2-0.
