Little League:
Tryouts for minors and majors baseball, boys and girls, will be held tonight, March 11, from 6-8 p.m., at Henkle Middle School.
A second tryout is scheduled for this Saturday, at 10 a.m., until tryouts are completed. For more information, call David Garwood at 493-1636.
Swimming:
Twelve-year-old Erin Jones of White Salmon made some waves Feb. 28-29 in Corvallis, Ore., during the Speedo OSI 11-14 Swimming Championships.
She improved her times in each of the six events she swam, and qualified to swim in finals of the 100-yard breast stroke, in which she placed eighth overall.
Jones completed the final race in 1:16.91 after clocking in at 1:17.10 in her preliminary.
Her other results were: 16th, 50-yard freestyle, 27.79; 11th, 500 free, 5:47.84; 9th, 50 breast, 35.66; 11th, 100 Individual Medley, 1:10.22.
The swimmer's times were all Northwest Zone Age Group Sectional qualifying times.
Jones and teammate Jessie Robertson of Trout Lake are scheduled to swim at sectionals in Federal Way, the weekend of March 21.
Baseball:
Right-hander Scott Hicks got his first win of the season March 2, pitching the first seven innings of Pacific University's 12-2 non-league win over Lewis & Clark in Portland, Ore.
Hicks, a senior from Klickitat, faced 27 batters and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks in evening his record at 1-1.
He was perfect before issuing his first base on balls with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. The run he gave up came in the sixth following a walk and two hits.
In two starts this season for the Forest Grove, Ore., school, Hicks has pitched 12.1 innings, struck out 11 and posted an earned-run average of 1.46.
Softball:
Mallory Holtman had Central Washington University's only hit during a 4-0 loss to the Canadian Olympic Team last Friday.
Her lead-off single came in the top of the fourth inning of the seven-inning exhibition game, on the first day of the 2004 Royal Inn CWU Invitational in Richland. In the first inning, Holtman reached on an error; she finished 1 for 2.
Holtman's final tournament totals were: 12 hits in 23 at-bats (.522), two home runs, three doubles, six runs, six runs batted in and 48 putouts , two assists and one error in 51 chances.
Her team completed the three-day tourney with a 5-2 record and improved to 8-4 overall. Holtman leads the Wildcats in batting average (.485, 16/33), home runs (3), RBIs (9), runs scored (9) and total bases (30).
Men's Track & Field:
A high jump of 6 feet, 9.75 inches earned Teddy Davis a three-way share of fifth place during the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships last month at the University of Washington.
Davis, a University of Oregon sophomore from White Salmon, cleared that height on his final attempt. He was eliminated from the competition after three misses at 6-11.75.
Women's Lacrosse:
Lisa Graves, a 2003 Columbia High School graduate, is playing for Linfield College's varsity team, which began the season 5-0.
As one of 12 starting players for the Wildcats, the freshman from White Salmon plays the defensive position of "third man."
According to a condensed version of lacrosse rules, Graves' "responsibility is to mark third home (a position that transitions play from defense to offense). She should be able to intercept passes, clear the ball, run fast and have good footwork."
In high school, Graves lettered three times in both volleyball and softball.
Class 2A Basketball:
Here are the first-round matchups for Trico Division teams at the 2004 state tournament in Yakima.
In girls action, La Center (22-1) plays Meridian (10-13) at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. At 4, Woodland (17-6) faces top-rated Chelan (23-0), followed at 5:30 by Ridgefield (16-7) vs. Cascade-Leavenworth (14-10).
In boys play, Woodland (14-9) takes on Eatonville (17-7) at 12:30. The first day's nightcap pits Ridgefield (18-5) against Chelan (17-6) at 9.
The double-elimination affairs run through Saturday, March 13, in the Yakima SunDome.
State Tourney Results:
Brewster (27-1) repeated as 1A boys champion, beating Northwest Christian (26-3), 59-52, last Saturday in Yakima.
Colfax (27-4) won another girls crown, running away from Lind-Ritzville (26-6), 53-39, in overtime in the last game of the 1A finals.
In Spokane, Republic (28-1) overwhelmed Wahkiakum (24-3) to win the boys title, 65-43, last Saturday in the Arena.
Greater Columbia B League champion Riverside Christian (24-3) of Yakima defeated Waterville (25-3), 69-59, to take fifth place in its tourney debut.
The girls championship game was a low-scoring tilt, with St. George's (24-6) of Spokane capturing its third title in five years, outlasting Almira-Coulee/Hartline (26-2), 42-37.
Riverside Christian (22-6) and Sunnyside Christian (20-8) of the GCB both collected trophies: RC its second, SC its seventh.
RC beat Mossyrock, 59-49, for fourth place, while SC edged DeSales, 48-45, for fifth.
