Don Warner and Dayl Pytel of White Salmon each were awarded a $500 scholarship from Skyline Foundation's Wayne M. Henkle MD Scholarship fund.
Warner was inspired to work in the medical field after volunteering at Skyline Hospital when he attended Columbia High School a few years back. He is now a senior at Washington State University and an honor roll student in the nursing program. He has been volunteering at Pullman's Homeless Shelter and at the Spokane Food Bank.
This scholarship will go toward the cost of some of his course work and materials while in his senior year at WSU.
Pytel currently works part-time as a nurse at Skyline Hospital. She is actively involved in the community through Skyline's Trauma Nurses Talk Tough program which goes into the schools and teaches children about bike helmet safety. Pytel intends to use her scholarship toward obtaining her Certified Emergency Nurse certification.
"It would be a great benefit to the hospital and my practice," said Pytel. "There is always so much to learn about emergency nursing. I love this community and being a part of the Skyline team."
The scholarship is targeted for residents of western Klickitat or Skamania counties who seek secondary education in health care. Recipients must be dedicated to returning to this area to work or volunteer in the health field for at least one year. Two scholarships are given out each year.
The next deadline for the scholarship application is May 31, 2012. For more information, go to the foundation's website: www.skylinefoundation.org.
