Kittitas converted two early fumbles by visiting Lyle-Klickitat-Wishram into touchdowns on its way to a 50-7 non-league football victory last Friday.
The Coyotes (2-0) scored from inside the Cougars' 10-yard line in the opening minutes after LKW fumbled on its first possession, then capitalized again when the Cougars (1-2) lost the ensuing kickoff at their 25.
Kittitas recovered the free ball and minutes later owned a 14-0 lead that grew to 28-0 by the end of the first quarter and 35-0 by the close of the first half.
"This game didn't start off like we had planned," Cougars coach David Barthlow said. "Kittitas was a big, physical team and when you give someone as short of a field as we did in the first quarter, things aren't going to go very well."
Still, the Cougars kept plugging away. And their efforts on offense eventually paid off in the fourth quarter with a 48-yard scoring run by sophomore Jeromie Mason.
"One thing for the players, they never gave up and continued to work hard the entire ball game," Barthlow noted.
But it was tough sledding all the way as Kittitas limited LKW to 33 offensive plays (all running) and 62 yards of total offense. Moreover, the Coyotes recorded four quarterback sacks on the only pass plays the Cougars attempted.
"Kittitas is a very good football team," Barthlow said, predicting, "and will be in the state playoffs again this year."
Next up:
The Cougars visit Pe Ell this Friday for a non-league encounter with the Trojans of the Pacific-Central 2B League. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Originally scheduled as an LKW home game, Barthlow said "it was changed to an away game due to a shortage of officials."
Riverview 25, at Goldendale 13:
The undefeated Panthers handed the Timberwolves their first setback of the season last Friday in a South-Central Athletic Conference crossover game.
Goldendale (2-1) pulled within 18-13 in the third quarter on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Milliren to Daniel Sanchez.
But Riverview (3-0) sealed the outcome in its favor with 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, with a 1-yard dive by Levi Davis.
It was the only score of the night for Davis, who led all ball-carriers with 127 yards.
For Goldendale, Milliren threw for two scores and 112 yards (he also was picked off four times), and fullback Nick Dohrman rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries.
La Center 39, at Stevenson 6:
The visiting Wildcats returned the opening kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown last Friday en route to winning their Trico Division opener.
La Center (1-0, 2-1) eventually led, 19-0, at halftime and finished its night's work with 380 total yards of offense.
Mendez did much of the damage, accounting for 209 total yards and scoring on a run of 39 yards and a pass play that covered 63.
Stevenson (0-1, 0-3), conversely, struggled to get its offense in gear against an active La Center defense.
The Bulldogs didn't record a first down until early the third quarter and trailed 26-0 before quarterback Caleb Scott fought off defensive pressure to hook up with running back Jesse Brown on a 48-yard scoring play 6:30 into the second half.
It was the only big play allowed by a La Center defense that held Stevenson to 42 yards on the ground.
