A plane crashed upon landing Monday morning at the Columbia Gorge Regional/The Dalles Municipal Airport. The pilot was transported by medical helicopter with injuries.
According to staff at the airport, the pilot lives in the region and flew frequently out of the airport.
Upon hearing the crash, airport staff responded to the crash site, as did the crew of a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter parked at the airport. The Coast Guard crew provided emergency medical care until the arrival of an ambulance crew from the Dallesport Fire Department.
A witness on scene said the plane was approaching to land when a wing appeared to dip and strike the ground.
The plane hit the runway and slid into a taxi way that provides access to a hangar area. Debris was scattered in a wide swath across the runway and into the taxi way.
Airport crews were cleaning up a small amount of fuel spilled from the plane.
