On Saturday, April 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., an immigration conference will be held at the Trout Lake School.
The conference is an opportunity to learn about who the immigrants are, circumstances that motivate them to immigrate, the experience of crossing the boarder, their employment and social histories while they are here and the impact they have on the United States when they arrive and settle here.
Speakers will be introduced by Pat Arnold, farm worker housing specialist, for the State of Washington.
Thomas Roach, immigration attorney from Pasco, will speak about the legal issues affecting immigration. At 1:20, he will speak to the general audience in English, and from 1:45 until 3 he will speak to the Spanish speaking audience.
Antonio Montoya , superintendent of Mt. Adams Alderdale Orchard, will talk about what motivated him and his wife to make the difficult immigration to the north and their experiences in the 20 years since they moved here.
Howard Bullic, a graduate of Trout Lake School system and long time resident of Klickitat County, will talk about his 2 years on border patrol on the US Mexico border.
Eric Schrum, formerly of Mt. Adams Orchards and now Bailey Orchards of Wasco County, Ore., past member of White Salmon School board, employer of many immigrant workers, will talk about employment issues he works with.
Dr.Tina Castenares, a physician instrumental in the development of services for the Mid Columbia's immigrant population, including La Clinica, will talk about health and human services for immigrant families.
There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the panel.
Music will be provided by performer and teacher, Josh Benavedes.
The Trout Lake Presbyterian Church sponsors the conference. There is no charge to attend, a voluntary donation will help defray costs.
