Each year the President of the United States proclaims January as National Volunteer Blood Month.
The American Red Cross invites the public to celebrate by donating blood. With the cold winter weather hindering donors from going to the blood drives, the blood supply dips dangerously low this time of year.
Volunteer blood donors are essential in helping premature babies, cancer and surgery patients and accident victims receive blood and blood products in order to stay alive.
The American Red Cross is celebrating this month and holding several blood drives throughout the Mid Columbia area in January:
Jan. 23, Hood River Inn, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., (541) 387-3669
Jan. 24, Goldendale Community, 1:30 to 6;30 p.m., 773-4825
Jan. 25, St Peter's Landmark, The Dalles, 1 to 6 p.m., (541) 298-1493
Jan. 26, Seventh Day Adventist Church, White Salmon, 1 to 6 p.m., 427-5268
Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 lbs and be in good general health. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood.
The American Red Cross Pacific Northwest Regional Blood Services is the sole supplier of blood and blood products to over 80 hospitals in Oregon, Washington and SE Alaska. In order to meet the needs of it's patients, PNWRBS must collect at least 5,000 pints of blood each week.
