If you ask the members of the HRV boys medley relay team to assess their state experience, they would likely tell you that they were just happy to qualify.
For many swimmers, like seniors Cody MacMillan, Sean Jennings and Erik Hidle, just reaching state is the accomplishment. Moving up the ladder at state is the cherry on top.
“It was fun,” said Jennings, who swam the breast-stroke leg. “We got here and moved up a few places from where we started. That was a small victory for us.”
The Eagles “A” relay team, which also features junior Henry Burton, began the meet as the 17th seed in an 18-team field.
But when Friday’s prelims were all said and done, the team had surged into 15th place — despite falling off their district time by approximately five-tenths of a second, from 1:47.50 to 1:47.98.
“We wanted to drop a few seconds, but didn’t get it done,” Jennings said. “Everyone on the team did what they were supposed to except me. But it was still a good experience.”
The team had hoped for a low-1:47 time that could help them crack the top 12 and reach the consolation finals.
“I think everyone gave it their best, and I was pleased overall,” coach Jane Nichols said. “They got to state, and that’s still an
accomplishment.”
In addition to the relay, Hidle reached state in the 100 free after winning the district title. His time of 52.88 seconds in Friday’s prelims kept him in 18th place overall.
