Columbia High’s girls track and field team capped its 2022 season with a third-place finish in the meet’s final event — the 4x400-meter relay — to place fifth at last weekend’s Class 1A state meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
It is a rarity that an athlete dominates a track and field event the way South Wasco County’s Madisen Davis did this spring. The junior capped a perfect season with nine wins in nine meets as she captured a javelin state championship with a top distance of 127-feet-1 inch, besting her nearest competitor, Adrian’s Shyanne Allaire (114-6), during opening-day action Thursday at the 1A OSAA State Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
A large combined contingent of 16 (nine girls, seven boys) Hood River Valley High Eagle swimmers participated in the 5A state championships at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) in Gresham. The highlight was that five members of Coach Kelly Cunningham’s Columbia River Conference champion girls swim team recorded top finishes in Friday’s preliminaries to earn a position in Saturday’s finals.
Dhani Freeland, Kylie Webb, and two Hood River Valley High School girls relay teams earned finals appearances and podium finishes over the weekend at the OSAA 5A state swimming championships at Mt. Hood Community College.
If you ask the members of the HRV boys medley relay team to assess their state experience, they would likely tell you that they were just happy to qualify.
