On Nov. 8, Gorge residents are invited to The Dalles Middle School for its 10 a.m. Veterans Day assembly. National Guard and Boy Scouts will post colors, the band and choir will play, and David James Schade, Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman, U.S. Naval Reserve, Retired, will speak. Coffee and pastries follow.

On Veterans Day itself, Nov. 11, two events happen in Hood River:
The annual observance hosted by Anderson Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., will be at 11 a.m. On the schedule are talks by Nick Kirby, the American Legion, and others, and recognition of men and women of all the armed services. Colors will be presented by Boy Scouts, and Daughters of the American Revolution will host a reception afterwards.
The city and its fire department will host local observance of the National Salute, officially at 11:11 a.m. The community is invited to the Ty Taylor Fire Station to observe a 21-second moment of silence and 21-bell salute, to commemorate the sacrifice of the Unknown Soldier interred at Arlington national Ceremony.
The National Salute is happening throughout Oregon on Nov. 11, and is organized locally by retired State Trooper Gavin McIlhenna, vice president of the Society of the Honor Guard Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
