George Rohrbacher will be signing copies of his first novel, Celilo Falls: the Story of a Murder, on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Book Peddler in White Salmon.
Rohrbacher, a former Gorge Commissioner and rancher from Centerville, has been working on the novel for over 20 years. His interest in Celilo Falls began when he first saw an old black and white photo of the Falls while waiting in line for his truck license.
In the book's acknowledgments, Rohrbacher offers credit to Mt. Adams Country historian Keith McCoy and landscape photographer Wilma Roberts, among others.
The work of fiction was inspired by true stories from the Gorge and Columbia Plateau. It starts with an axe murder that took place a short distance from the grave of Celilo Falls. It is a tale of cultures in collision, a lost world, and the struggle for a future.
In reviewing the book, author Mary Dodds Schlick writes, "I've been waiting a long time for this rich and engaging novel -- the story of a young man's struggle to balance the traditional world of his native Columbia and Klickitat River people against the challenges of life within today's larger community."
Rohrbacher is the author of Zen Ranching and the Farming Game and the inventor of The Farming Game.
The novel is available at Dickey Farms in Bingen, Collage of the Gorge and the Book Peddler in White Salmon, and Waucoma Books in Hood River.
