Klickitat became the first team to qualify for the inaugural state Class 1B volleyball tournament with a sweep of Sunnyside Christian last Saturday in the Yakima Valley District 5 championship match at Goldendale.
The Vandals (10-1) scored 35 kills and served six aces in taking three closely contested sets from the Knights, by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-19.
Greater Columbia B League player of the year Aryn Davis led the way for Klickitat, recording 16 kills in 28 attacks and three blocks, and serving two aces.
Fellow senior Trisheena Keys also played a solid match, scoring with four service aces while going 17 for 19 from behind the line. She shared the team lead in saves--three--with senior Melissa Huwe and sophomore Kali Linville.
Huwe, who was named to the league's All-Opponent Team, also contributed five kills and four assists in the district title match, and Linville doled out a team-best 17 assists.
Other big contributors to the Vandals' victory were eighth-grader Samantha Brewer (8 kills in 19 chances, 2 blocks) and freshman Zoe Lindner (3 kills, 2 blocks, 13/13 serving).
"Our team chemistry is great," said Vandals Coach Kirk Huwe. "I'm very proud of the girls."
Klickitat finished the district title match with 35 kills in 67 attempts (52 percent) and a serving percentage of 81 (56/69).
It's in that latter department that Huwe said the Vandals will need to work on in the two weeks they have off between district and the start of the state tournament (Nov. 10-11 at Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane).
During the regular season, Klickitat put 692-of-823 offerings in play, good for 84 percent. In tournament play, Huwe said, that won't cut it.
"We need to improve on our serving," Huwe noted, "as it will be key in our ability to control possession."
In other action:
Sunnyside Christian advanced to last Saturday's district championship match against Klickitat by defeating Trout Lake/Glenwood in five sets, in a loser-out qualifier.
The Eagles and the Knights split the first two sets, with the Knights taking the first, 25-22, the Eagles the second, 25-19.
TLG then took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 28-26 third-set victory. But Sunnyside bounced back to win the fourth, 25-19, and force a fifth set.
The Knights were first to 15 in the tiebreaker, winning 15-10.
In the 2B final between La Salle and Riverside Christian, La Salle won in a sweep, 25-15, 25-15, 25-23. The victory gave La Salle the district's No. 1 seed in this weekend's regional tournament. Riverside qualified as the No. 2 seed.
