An excerpt from "The Asian Eye Story" written by Nack states, "I had heard that volunteers were needed at the Hope Project, a self-help mission in a very poor and squalid 13th century neighborhood of New Delhi."
"I spent my time with the impressionable preteen "hulla-gullah" girls, who in this society were a bit too old to be considered children and just young enough to evade an early traditional marriage. I taught them origami, we shared words in each others' languages, and I escorted them outside the neighborhood, a first experience for many, to visit their local New Delhi museums...I fell in love with these girls. I knew I needed a reason to come back to India again.
"One afternoon I met, by chance...an elderly gentleman who had spent much of his life working to revitalize traditional Indian crafts...His support of highly skilled craftspeople built lifelong endearing relationships with artisans all over India. Through his generosity and kind spirit, many doors were opened to me. He taught me that enabling artisans to earn a living through their craft both preserves these rich traditions and insures their sustainability."
"Whether hand-spun, handwoven, hand-painted, hand-tied, hand-embroidered or hand-block printed, each piece of this high integrity fabric is a display of the ancient wisdom, the deep knowledge and the creative capacity of the artisan. I began to realize that these textiles had a personal character, an intimacy, and an exceptional quality unlike anything available in today's anonymous, mass produced marketplace."
