For the first time in its six-year history, Columbia High's wrestling program failed to qualify a wrestler for the Southwest Washington District 4 2A Tournament.
The Bruins were shut out during the Trico Division Championships, which also served as the district qualifying meet, on Saturday, Feb. 7, at La Center.
Trico regular-season champion Castle Rock also won the league meet. The Rockets scored 305.5 points and qualified 19 wrestlers for the Feb. 14 district tournament on their home mats.
Ridgefield finished second in team standings with 263.5 points, followed by La Center (157.5), Woodland (126.5), Stevenson (110), Ilwaco (59) and White Salmon (14).
Columbia High closed out its regular season with matches at Wahtonka on Jan. 27, at Castle Rock on Jan. 29, and versus Ridgefield at La Center on Jan. 30.
At Wahtonka 36, Columbia High 18 --
The final meeting between the Bruins and the Eagles turned mostly on forfeits.
CHS surrendered five matches without a fight, while Wahtonka sacrificed three.
Winners by forfeit for CHS were freshman Chris Durham (140 pounds), and sophomore Josh Cowan (215) and Josh Burrell (275).
Four Bruins lost on the mat, three by pin.
Wahtonka's Amado Velador pinned CHS sophomore Greg Strain (145) in the third period. Sophomore Kayla Crank (152) fell in the second period, and classmate Nolan Kenoyer went down for the count with one second left in the second period of his 160-pound match.
Freshman Joe Greiner (171) dropped a 12-5 varsity decision, but came back later in the evening to win an exhibition match at 160 with a third-period pin.
Durham (140) also picked up an exhibition victory, defeating his opponent, 15-14, with a five-point reversal/near fall in the closing seconds of the third period.
At Castle Rock 76, Columbia High 6 --
Sophomore Greg Strain pinned his opponent in a 145-pound class match to account for all of the Bruins' scoring.
The Rockets swept through the remaining field of Bruins wrestlers, and picked up a number of forfeits, to win the match and clinch the Trico Division's regular-season title.
At La Center: Ridgefield 84, Columbia High 0 --
The Bruins had only four wrestlers in action for their final match of the regular season.
Sophomores Alex Villa (140) and Greg Strain (145) and freshmen Andrew Parsons (171) and Joe Greiner (160) all lost matches on first-period pins.
