As a continuation of the Sunday Afternoon History Series, the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum announces the program, "The David Douglas Enigma & Mystery" to be presented by Joanna Grammon on Sunday, Nov. 18.
Come to the DeGroote Theatre at 2 p.m. to explore the life and mysterious death of Douglas.
David Douglas was a tireless enigma who in his 35 years catalogued more than 200 Northwest plants. Born to a poor Scottish stone mason, Douglas left school at age 11 and for seven years toiled in the gardens of the Earl of Mansfield learning about botany through mentors.
He came to America in 1824 and traveled to Fort Vancouver in 1825. Douglas negotiated the Cascade Rapids many times but never without hot tea and a pipe.
Grammon is a weekly newspaper editor and occasional freelance writer who has researched Lewis & Clark and David Douglas as they intersect with the history of the Columbia River Gorge. She has produced several multimedia CDs and DVDs on Lewis and Clark and the river region.
Grammon's talk is free with admission and is part of the history series volunteer, Les Hastings, has organized for the museum.
This is the last topic for 2007 but the programs will continue in 2008 on every third Sunday of the month.
