On Monday, Dec. 19, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will begin an emergency rock fall repair project on State Route 14 in the area between Home Valley and Cook.
The project will repair an unstable section of rock face on the north side of the highway near milepost 54 where significant loose rock has developed.
The rock loosened in the past couple of days and requires careful and delicate excavation.
The extent and duration of the work, as well as traffic impacts on this stretch of SR 14 are unknown at this time. However, motorists should expect delays throughout next week. During this time, the crew will clear the loose rock on the slope.
The details and scope of this work, as well as resulting traffic impacts will be released on Monday immediately after detailed emergency plan has been developed.
Rockslides have caused deadly consequences in both Washington and Oregon in the past couple of months, including the fatal rockslide on I-90 west of Snoqualmie Pass in September, and a more recent rockslide on I-84 in Oregon.
WSDOT is taking precautions to secure this unstable slope and prevent possible damage to the motorists traveling on the highway below, as well as the adjacent railroad, and the crew on site.
Until construction begins, WSDOT maintenance crews will continue to monitor the site.
