The Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) Southwest Region Traffic Office received approval from its Olympia headquarters office to reduce the speed limit on a small section of State Route 141 in Klickitat County from 45 mph to 40 mph.
WSDOT will be posting the new signs, and the new speed limit will be effective immediately after the signs are installed on or around Tuesday, Aug. 1.
The new 40 mph speed limit will be for both directions of SR 141 in the vicinity of the community of Husum, from milepost 8.46 (0.10 miles south of Rattlesnake Creek Bridge) to 8.87 (0.10 miles north of White Salmon River Bridge).
WSDOT is imposing the lowered speed limit to increase public safety in the immediate area.
This stretch of SR 141 is congested due to recreational facilities, resulting in a large pedestrian presence. Additionally, there are multiple intersections and narrow structures, all resulting in increased hazard to both motorists and pedestrians.
In response to public concern regarding the situation, WSDOT traffic engineers and Washington State Patrol representatives met with local citizens and community officials and presented the proposed speed limit revision, which was met with the community's approval.
To further alert motorists, WSDOT will implement enhanced traffic signage.
