If the necessary permits can be obtained, there could soon be a new office building constructed in Husum.
The Washington Department of Natural Resources is proposing to build a wood-framed modular office facility on a concrete foundation at 110 Main Street in Husum, directly north of where the Husum post office is located.
The building's dimensions would be 24 feet by 60 feet.
Because the site is near the White Salmon River, the project requires a shoreline conditional use permit before construction can begin.
"Increasing work loads in the area require more personnel to work out of this site," explained James Sweeney, facilities planner for the DNR in Olympia. "The proposed building will provide an enhanced work environment and meet current building codes."
Sweeney added that the project would have no impact on the White Salmon River. Currently, DNR personnel are based in a 34 feet by 48 feet converted shop on the same parcel where the new facility would be placed.
Sweeney said the move did not mean more employees would be hired.
"It's just to provide a better space for the folks already there," said Sweeney.
According to Sweeney, the current building was built in the 1950s as a shop. Over the years, portions of the building were converted to offices.
"It's not a good mix of uses," Sweeney explained.
If approved by the Planning Department, work would begin at the site on Nov. 1 and be completed within about three weeks.
The cost of the project is estimated at approximately $100,000.
A public hearing on the proposal is planned for Oct. 28, before the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners in Goldendale.
