The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the distribution of grant awards totaling more than $500,000 through the Wildland Fire Assistance Grant Program.
These funds, provided by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and the Interior, are in addition to a quarter million dollars distributed by DNR in June 2005.
"The funding from these grants will help small and rural fire districts and departments be better equipped to protect homes and resources," said Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland. "It also allows them to work in partnership with DNR and others to help prevent catastrophic wildfires."
The Wildland Fire Assistance Grant Program is open to all fire districts and fire departments serving communities with less than 10,000 residents. Fire districts and fire departments serving communities with more than 10,000 residents may qualify, providing their service area includes a rural area or rural community with a population less than 10,000.
Funding can be used for such things as fire equipment, fire prevention, vehicles, training, clothing, equipment, and some communication devices.

Fire District #13 (Appleton), $7,147, vehicle acquisition/refurbishment.
