Tyler Essex's tip-in with one second remaining gave Lyle a 45-43 victory over Riverside Christian Tuesday night in an elimination-round game of the District 5 Class B Tournament in Goldendale.
Riverside's James McKinney nailed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 43.
The ensuing inbounds pass went to Lyle senior Tyler Austin, who momentarily lost control of the ball before finding Essex in the Cougars' front-court.
Essex quickly passed to freshman teammate Martin Grace, then crashed the boards.
Grace missed an eight-footer from the baseline, but the rebound came off the rim to Essex, who held the inside position for the game-winning putback.
The victory earned the Cougars (11-9) a rematch with Glenwood in the second of two district semifinal games set for Friday night in Sunnyside.
After matching Riverside point-for-point in a 10-10 first quarter, Lyle trailed 25-18 at halftime.
But the Cougars outscored the Crusaders, 15-4, in the third quarter to gain a 32-30 edge entering the final frame.
Free throws by Essex and Grace put Lyle in front 43-40 with just over a half minute to play, but crucial misses at the line left the door open for Riverside to tie.
The Crusaders worked the clock until McKinney got open and pocketed a three ball to knot the score at 43.
Grace, who sank 3-of-4 foul shots in the fourth quarter, led Lyle with 13 points. Essex added 10.

The Vandals, who led 18-14 after one quarter and 35-31 at the half, outscored the Knights 16-8 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
