Klickitat County has contracted with Mid Columbia Paving Company, of Dallesport, to provide improvements to NW Lincoln Street, between State Route 141 and the White Salmon City Limits.
The goal of the work is to provide the following:
1. Widen the roadway to 20 feet, between SR 141 and the White Salmon city limits.
2. Keep traffic speeds slow by limiting the vehicular road width to 16 feet.
3. Keep pedestrians safer by designating a four-foot pedestrian only shoulder.
4. Reduce erosion and improve drainage by installing ditches and culverts.
5. Improve ride with an asphalt overlay.
The work began on Monday, Sept. 18, to widen the road. Currently the road width varies from 11 feet to 20 feet, too narrow in many places for two way traffic.
The contractors have been asked to only remove the trees and other obstacles that are absolutely necessary.
A white dashed line on the road area represents the location where pavement will be cut and widened an additional six feet. The newly widened portion will be paved, but no work will be done to the old pavement until next year.
The run-off from last winter, between Palos Verdes and SR 141, remained on the roadway shoulders and driveways, causing significant erosion. Included with this work is the establishment of roadside ditches.
The county public works department will follow up the ditch work, later this fall, with improvements to the driveways, by adding driveway culverts or dips in the driveway.
This work will keep the water off the road until it can be sent to an appropriate natural drainage.
Finally, after this work has wintered, Klickitat County will provide an overlay to the entire 20' width.
To keep traffic speeds down, and to provide pedestrian access, the county will limit the widths for the traffic to a tight 16 feet; the remaining four feet will be designated for pedestrian traffic.
During the work, sections of the road will be closed to through traffic. Residents will always have access even when work is occurring.
