The weeks after Halloween are when both Hood River city and county’s public works departments take the time to make sure that all of their equipment is ready for winter.

There has been an abundance of wildlife around the farm this year. We have enjoyed watching the deer as they grazed in the orchard, eating pears that have fallen to the ground during the harvest. They are extremely nonchalant prior to hunting season.

Snow falling gently from the winter sky was a beautiful sight back in December, bringing the hush of its thick carpet to the valley floor, calming the cacophony of Christmas carolers and taking the edge off the hapless hucksters hawking their wares.

To the editor: To all the angels with snow plows, snow blowers and shovels who have gone way beyond the call of duty to help people this winter by snowblowing, plowing, and shoveling walks and driveways so we can motivate and get around, my thanks and more thanks from everyone for your kind and concerned efforts. Rescuers on snowmobiles retrieved three people Sunday who got stranded as they tried to walk out of their wooded cabin home off Fivemile Road after running out of propane and fuel.
