Columbia High couldn't sustain a fast start last Wednesday in losing to Onalaska, 48-31, in a loser-out game of the double-elimination 7Southwest District Class 1A Girls Basketball Tournament in Centralia.
The Bruins finished the season with a 16-7 record--their second consecutive winning season under head coach Mike Yarnell. Moreover, the team's 16 victories were the program's most since 1993, when CHS won 17 times.
Columbia entered last Wednesday's game against Onalaska needing two more wins to advance to the state 1A tournament in Yakima.
The Bruins headed themselves in that direction by racing to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter. But they couldn't keep it up as the Loggers pulled within 14-7 by the end of the period.
Beginning in the second quarter, things got progressively worse for Columbia.
The Loggers (16-6) turned up the pressure defensively with a half-court trap that took the Bruins out of their game. By the end of the first half, Onalaska had converted a seven-point deficit into a five-point halftime lead (22-17).
In the third quarter, Onalaska delivered the coup de grace, shutting out Columbia while putting in 14 points of its own.
The Bruins managed to put together a 14-point fourth quarter but it was too little, too late.
