Six meet records, including two by Glenwood athletes, went by the wayside during the girls competition of last Saturday's Bruin Booster Invitational.
Seniors Jenna Dean and Chelsy Wheelhouse of Glenwood established new meet standards in the javelin and discus, respectively, to account for all of their team's scoring during the nine-team competition at CHS Stadium.
Estacada, Ore., repeated as invitational champion, scoring 124 points. Columbia High, with 90, finished second for the second year in a row.
Junior Kristin Janney accounted for more than a third of CHS's season-high point total, winning three events and finishing second in a fourth to capture Athlete of the Meet honors.
"That's what gets you those kinds of awards," Bruins Coach Doug Miller said of Janney's standout performance.
Dean won the javelin with a record-setting toss of 134 feet, 4 inches.
She beat the old record (set in 1995) by seven feet and edged Lyle junior Lindsey Blaine (132-71/2), who was victorious in the shot put (29-11) and third in the discus (99-11).
Coming into the meet, Dean (145-6) and Blaine (143-1) had the two longest javelin throws this season.
Wheelhouse broke her own year-old meet record, hurling in the discus 120-7. She threw 117-2 last year.
Janney placed first in the high jump (5-0), 100-meter dash (13.1) and triple jump (33-4). She came in second in the 200 (27.24).
Estacada got two meet records from Brynn Cogdill in the 3200 (11.40, after running meet-record 11:55 last year) and 800 (2:24.53), and a third from Krisia Schaefer in the 300 low hurdles (48.22).
Shaylee Scott of Washougal registered a meet record in the pole vault, mounting 9-6 to better her year-old mark by three inches.
Sophomore Katie Mansfield provided a second in the triple jump (30-5) and a third in the long jump (14-10) for CHS.
The 4x400 relay team of Meghan McCutcheon, Abby Zuck, Whitney Shelley and Sylvia Kreiter also posted a second-place finish (4:33.63).
Junior Jennifer Clark and sophomore Alexa Williams contributed third places in the pole vault (8-0) and high jump (4-6) respectively.
"Those were 12 big points," Miller said of the Clark/Williams scoring performances. "It was nice to finally have enough girls healthy to fill some hold in some events."
Shelley finished fourth in the 1600 (6:32.2), while fellow freshman Justine Rawding took fifth in the 800 (2:54.34).
The 800 relay team of Rawding, Mansfield, Clark and Williams placed third (55.09).
"Strong competition brings out the best in kids," noted Miller. "And this was our girls team's best meet of the season."
Team scoring:
Estacada 124, Columbia High 90, Washougal 88, Stevenson 78, Mossyrock 53, Lyle 30, White Pass 30, Glenwood 20, Trout Lake 18.
