When the game is on the line, star players find a way to win it for their team.
La Center senior Brittney Roggenkamp did that for the visiting Wildcats last Friday, scoring 11 of her 19 points in the third quarter of a Trico Division game against Columbia High.
Roggenkamp's second-half heroics earned the Wildcats (2-0 in Trico, 7-2 overall) a hard-fought 42-28 victory over the Bruins (0-2, 6-4).
Columbia, sparked by junior point guard Chelan Weiler and senior forward Becky Clary took control of the contest in the second quarter, outscoring La Center, 14-9, to build an 18-13 halftime bulge.
Weiler scored four points in the quarter and Clary had five as the Bruins ended the first half with an 11-4 run.
But the Wildcats, led by Roggenkamp, gradually chipped away at the Bruins' lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
After being held in check for two quarters, Roggenkamp seized the iniative in the first minute of the second half.
She netted two free throws after being fouled on a drive to the basket, then scored off a steal to pull La Center within 18-17.
Weiler countered for CHS to make it 20-17, but a pair of free throws by Brooke Burns kicked off a 15-2 La Center run that erased the deficit.
A 3-pointer by Roggenkamp with 5:21 left in the period gave the Wildcats a 22-20 edge--their first lead since 9-7 in the second quarter--that swelled to 32-22 by period's end.
The closest the Bruins got after that was 32-24 on a basket by junior Kelsey Kidd with 4:42 remaining in the game.
Roggenkamp and Burns made sure of that by sinking back-to-back 3-pointers that increased the Wildcats' lead to 38-24.
Columbia, which was paced by Weiler's eight points, finished with its lowest point total of the season, despite out-rebounding La Center, 40-25.
At Ridgefield 59, Columbia High 35 --
The Spudders connected on almost 50 percent of their field-goal attempts in the Jan. 3 Trico Division opener for both teams.
Ridgefield put in 24-of-49 shots while Columbia made 14 of 40.
Spudders center Lauren Hefflin led all scorers with 19 points, including 11 in the first half to help stake Ridgefield to a 28-18 lead.
Ridgefield closed the door on Columbia in the third quarter, outscoring CHS, 17-6.
Sophomore Ericka Ziegler's 11 points and eight rebounds were tops for the Bruins, who won the rebound battle, 34-25, but turned the ball over 31 times.
