A cold start to the third quarter of its Jan. 15 SWW 1A Trico Division game against Rochester wasn't what Columbia High had in mind after taking a one-point lead into halftime.
Instead of building on their 35-34 first-half edge, the Bruins struggled with their shooting and their ball-handling, and soon surrendered their advantage en route to a 73-54 loss.
After getting lots of good looks at the basket in the first two quarters, "in the third, we couldn't capitalize on the opportunities when we had them," Bruins Coach Scott Kasenga said.
The visiting Warriors seized on the Bruins' failures by putting together a 20-point quarter that left them in front, 54-41, after three quarters of play.
Rochester then put the finishing touch on its come-from-behind victory by outscoring Columbia, 19-13, in the final period.
Kent Shelley led the Bruins with 19 points, Jared McDonald scored 13 and Carlos Mendoza had 12, including eight in the second quarter in which CHS overcame a 19-18 first-quarter deficit.
"We played well in the first half, and we're getting better every game," Kasenga noted. "The key for us now, as it has been all season, is that we've just got to make more shots to give ourselves a chance."
Coming Up:
A busy week was in store for Columbia, which was scheduled to play its rematch with Ilwaco here on Tuesday, go to Kalama for a make-up contest on Wednesday and travel to Castle Rock for a Trico game on Friday.
"These last few weeks are important for us because we've got five of our last eight games at home," Kasenga said and added, "If we're going to make any kind of run, we'll have to take care of our homecourt and win some games."
