A 13-4 run to close out the first quarter propelled Hockinson to a 75-30 Trico Division victory over Columbia High here last Thursday.
The Hawks (3-0 Trico, 9-2 overall) held a 17-6 lead after one quarter and extended that to 36-14 by halftime.
Columbia's troubles began with its inability to solve Hockinson's halfcourt trap, which the Hawks used to force turnovers (20 on the night) that often led to easy transition baskets or trips to the foul line.
Hockinson attempted 43 free throws and sank 28 on a night when it also made 23 shots from the field.
"Their press was aggravating for us," Bruins Coach Scott Kasenga said. "That speed is tough for us to duplicate in practice, even with extra bodies on the court."
The Bruins, who fell short of 40 points for the fourth time in five games, were limited to eight field goals and 40 attempts but, on a positive note, converted a season-high 13-of-18 free throws (9 of 10 in the second half).
"Scoring and turnovers are the two biggest issues for us right now," Kasenga noted, "But if we can get those things straightened out, I think we'll be OK. We just need to be more patient and make good decisions with the ball."
Juniors Thomas Jeter and Austin Krentz each scored eight points to lead CHS (0-4, 3-6), while the Bruins' leading scorer, senior Andrew Culp, was held to six.
Hockinson's Keith Moilanen led all scorers with 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kyle Kalian added 12 points for the Hawks.
"Hockinson is probably the best team we're going to see this year," Kasenga said. "They're my pick to make it to state and bring back a trophy."
