To help celebrate White Salmon's Centennial, the White Salmon Valley Community Library invites kids of all ages to "Journey Back in Time" with a traveling, hands-on museum presented by "Pioneer Living" of Lyle.
The fun begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, in the library's Sprint/Baker Gallery.
To discover more about the pioneer life, children and parents will participate in six different learning centers with historical displays and hands-on stations.
Included in the activities is gold panning, where kids can relive the excitement of the Gold Rush and weigh their find on a set of authentic miners' scales.
A "Children's Learning Center" will feature over 40 handmade wooden folk toys from craftspeople all across America. At other stations, participants can try pumping water from an old rain barrel, scrubbing clothes on a scrubboard and wringing them out through a 150-year- old washing machine, grinding wheat into flour and rolling out bread dough, creating necklaces, and much more!
The "Pioneer Living" traveling museum was created in 1989 by Terry Hess of Lyle. With a background in teaching and living history work, Hess was able to imagine a program where the museum was brought to schools and libraries and in which children were able to touch and manipulate everything in the exhibit.
"Pioneer Living" was received with rave reviews. Today there are eight "Pioneer Living" programs on tour, covering over 30 states.
