Faith in Action Providence Community Caregivers is looking for a few good volunteers to help people with disabilities or long-term illness to remain in their homes.
A new volunteer training will be held Thursday, Aug. 25, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at White Salmon United Methodist Church, 104 Main Street, across from Whitson Elementary School.
A light lunch will be served.
Volunteers help with simple things, such as picking up groceries or providing a ride to the doctor. With this assistance, members of the community who have long-term illnesses or disabilities can maintain their independence for as long as possible.
"Helping a neighbor maintain his or her independence is an extremely rewarding experience, and we're excited to offer area residents the opportunity to experience the joy of volunteering through Faith in Action," said Jill Dant, coordinator of Faith in Action Providence Community Caregivers.
The local Faith in Action program, which serves both Hood River and Klickitat counties, has trained 45 volunteer caregivers and looks forward to training at least another 10 people at the Aug. 25 event.
"Many people have elderly parents or grandparents who may need this type of assistance, but who live quite a distance away," said Dant, "This is a great way to do something in honor of those people we love." Local Faith in Action volunteers are currently assisting three care receivers and have other requests for both long and short-term services.
