On Saturday, Dec. 12, people from throughout the Gorge will gather in downtown Hood River for a candlelight vigil to express their hope and desire for a just and aggressive global climate treaty.
The vigil, one of thousands worldwide, will take place as world leaders gather in Copenhagen for a critical United Nations conference on climate change.
Leading scientists across the globe agree that 350 parts per million (ppm) is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.
"We need a deal strong enough to pull us back from the brink of climate catastrophe," explained Connie Burton, an organizer of the local event. "We urge concerned people of all ages to come and let their voices be heard. As parents, grandparents and those who love this planet we can no longer stand by in silence as the CO2 levels in our atmosphere soar."
The vigil will take place at 5:30 p.m. near the giant Christmas tree at 2nd and State. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and bring a candle or flashlight.
