Gilchrist, Ore. 46, Lyle 42 --
The Cougars trailed, 31-30, at halftime of last Saturday's Sherman County Tournament consolation game in Moro, Ore.
The score after three quarters was 40-36.
"We were always playing from behind," Cougars Coach Joe Bales said. "We'd expend a bunch of energy getting back into the game, then have no energy down the stretch."
Gilchrist took a 17-12 lead in the first quarter, but Lyle (0-2) rallied in the second to get within one at halftime.
For the game, the Cougars were out-rebounded, 26-21, and attempted just six foul shots to Gilchrist's 16.
Junior Kalvin Kernan scored a game-high 16 points and had eight rebounds for Lyle, which also got 14 points from senior Justin Carlson and eight points and seven assists from sophomore Martin Grace.
Arlington, Ore. 56, at Klickitat 31 --
The Vandals failed to score more than eight points in any quarter of last Saturday's non-league defeat by the Honkers.
Jonas Keys, a 5-10 sophomore, nearly had a triple-double for Klickitat (0-2), finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals.
But the Vandals' next highest scorer, freshman Richard McConnville, and second-best rebounder, 6-1 junior James Brewer, had just seven points and seven rebounds, respectively.
Arlington, which had two players score in double figures, built a 28-17 bulge by halftime, then more than doubled it by outscoring Klickitat, 28-14, in the second half.
At Sherman County 45, Lyle 32 --
After a sluggish start last Friday, the Cougars kept the Sherman tournament semifinal close most of the way.
After struggling against Sherman's press and being outscored, 14-4, in the first quarter, Lyle adjusted to the pressure and rallied to go into the intermission down by just three, 18-15.
The Huskies led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter and led 29-22 entering the final frame.
In the fourth, the Cougars got back within seven points with four minutes remaining, only to lose senior Justin Carlson and junior Callan Johnson to fouls.
The loss of Carlson was especially hurtful. Up until then, he had provided seven rebounds, four steals, four points and three assists.
Team scoring honors went to Junior Kalvin Kernan, who netted nine points, to go with five rebounds. Sophomore Martin Grace added seven points and five steals.
Overall, Lyle had more steals than Sherman (18-14), but got out-rebounded (31-20) and committed 30 turnovers.
"They also did a better job of attacking the basket and, as a result, they shot 19 free throws to our six," Bales noted. "All in all, it was a frustrating game but certainly something we can build on."
Yakama Tribal 61, at Klickitat 45 --
In a season-opening non-league matchup between Greater Columbia B League members, the Eagles got the better of the Vandals last Friday.
Yakama Tribal, led by Derek Payer's game-high 35 points, pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Klickitat, 14-7.
