The public is invited to join the winter/spring series of the White Salmon Valley Community Library's monthly Saturday Book Discussion group.
The series, titled "Extreme Reads," is a selection of books written about disasters in the Northwest and British Columbia including both nonfiction and fiction. The first book in the series is now available at the library's front desk.
The first title, The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant, is the story of the cutting of a unique golden 300-year-old Sitka spruce located on Canada's Queen Charlotte Islands.
Booklist gave this book a *Starred Review* describing it as a tragic tale...[of the] conflicts among loggers, native rights activists, and environmentalists, [that] induces us to more deeply consider the consequences of our habits of destruction.
The discussion of this title is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. in the library's Sprint/Baker Gallery.
The other titles in the series will be: The Last Town on Earth: A Novel by Thomas Mullen to be discussed on March 6; Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon by Gregory Nokes on April 3; and The Deep Dark: Disaster and redemption in America's riches Silver Mine by Gregg Olsen on May 1.
