Columbia Art Gallery's new exhibit for April is "Figure as Icon," featuring local artists Lesa Hanners, Melody Robichaud, Vicky Van Koten and Gayle Weisfield.
An icon is defined as an artistic representation of an idea or activity and these four artists have explored this subject with exceptional depth and feeling. Four artists -- four different viewpoints.
Hanner's work is drawn from childhood's imaginative play, creating a world of ogres, dragons and fantastical personalities. She uses unusual accessories and rich fabrics to dramatize the images she creates.
Robichaud's pieces are lyrical and mystical and invite contemplation. She utilizes natural materials to create subtle textures and shapes that are timeless.
Sisters VanKoten and Weisfield combine found materials with various media to create figures representing many different ideas and activities. Their work is both amusing and intriguing.
The show will run from April 5 through April 29.
The exhibit reception will be April 5 from 7 to 9 pm at the gallery, located at 207 Second Street in Hood River.
Columbia Art Gallery is a participant in the First Friday event sponsored by Hood River Downtown Merchants Association.
